What To Do With A Few Broken Bits & Pieces....Great Fun!

I suspect that we all have a box or two of broken bits or seconds that we think may come in handy one day. My "bits box" is heaving, so it was time to take a peek and see what was in there! Once upon a time, I would be at my workbench day in, day out, simply creating miniatures to sell. Not so much now, but with our October 12th Vintage & Artisan Dolls House Fair looming on the horizon, I thought I would have a spot of creating with some of the "bits" and see where it took me....and it has been great fun.

The Tiny Room
I have had this tiny wooden drawer for years, so out it came from the box and sat on my coffee table for a while, as I pondered what to do with it. Then after more rummaging in the "bit box", gradually as I came across the various broken treasures, the ideas starting flowing.

A scrap of antique wallpaper lined the walls, a mocked up matching border created via the computer helped to tidy up the uneven join between the top of the wallpaper and the papered ceiling.

Then I came across this 1930s Charbens metal chair, which had very little original paint and a missing back foot, all of which had made this chair undesirable. So a bit of paint, a teeny piece of antique broderie anglaise, a second hand miniature embroidered cushion (no idea where it came from - have had it for so long), plus one of my miniature handmade books, finished it off nicely. Then there was this gorgeous c1920s German bisque doll with original clothes but....missing her right arm. Once glued into place at an angle, you would never know that she was missing her arm!

And finally a plastic imitation round mirror touched up with paint, an antique glass cat missing bead eyes and collar, and one of my handmade framed pictures, all set this off nicely.

The Fireplace
This is a slightly larger drawer than the one above.  I had just the smallest scrap left of the most beautiful antique floral wallpaper, has been a real favourite of mine. There was just enough to line the walls. Then there was this replica c1920s German fireplace, left over from a whole batch that I made several years ago, based on a real c1920s German dolls house fireplace from my own private collection. But this particular one I classified as a second, as I was never really happy with the archway of the tiled fire insert.
So to disguise this fact, I made an old fashioned fire screen from scraps of wood, celluloid glazing, a painted metal handle and a pretty antique floral silk from an old cigarette packet.
On the mantelpiece sits two British made coloured glass candle holders (had them for so long I cannot remember the guy's name who made them) with imitation candles, a British made painted metal clock, and a framed picture plus vintage style envelopes made by myself. The vase is a modern reproduction but which I have had for several years, and the flowers are broken Britains lead flower heads, painted up and glued in place.

These little drawer scenes are ideal to sit amongst the books on your book shelf, or anywhere really, including a mantelpiece.

c1930s Tri-ang Chair
Ok...what do you with a c1930s Tri-ang chair that is in a highly undesirable condition due to a replacement (not by me) dodgy front right leg and a missing chunk of wood down the right hand side of the chair back?

I did ponder a while about this...and then resorted back to my trusty method of disguising and hiding, using piles of my vintage style books and a piece of draped antique lace.
Some people may just have thrown this damaged chair away, but I just couldn't do that. At least now, this is rather more acceptable and could be useful to someone.

Workbench Scene
This started off as a broken vintage desk, it kind of just evolved as I went along. I removed the odd shaped drawer, added a lower shelf and painted it up, giving it an aged finish.
The main focus of this scene is the half built dolls house, based on an actual design found in the c1933 Handicraft Annual.

Papers were mocked up based on the exact ones that were used in the real dolls house, as found in the Handicraft annual. The result was quite effective.

The rest of this little scene was filled with relevant bits and bobs, mostly made myself, along with oddments from my "bits box".

All these will be available to purchase on my KT Miniatures Stand at the Vintage & Artisan Dolls House Fair on Saturday 12th October.

Vintage &.Artisan Dolls House Fair In Thame - 2 Months To Go & What Is It All About?

After all the months of planning, there are now only 2 months to go until our VINTAGE & ARTISAN DOLLS HOUSE FAIR takes place on Saturday 12th October, and I am delighted to announce that all the 20 stand holders are booked! We have some truly amazing miniaturist artisans coming, plus some fabulous antique and vintage dolls house traders too. Some of the artisans rank amongst the very best in the UK, and many of the stand holders rarely attend fairs other than the large national events, so this is a fantastic opportunity to meet them in a smaller informal setting.

Come and join us all at this unique and rather special event that is being held at Thame Barns Centre, which is set in the heart of the historic Oxfordshire market town of Thame.

Thame is rich in history and the museum plus a variety of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs, etc. are literally just a few minutes walk away from this fair venue.  Plus of course it is Midsomer Murder country - they are often filming for the long running TV show around here, so fans of the show may recognise some of the buildings!

The full list of stand holders can be seen below with all their details, live links are in blue. (Dolls House Restoration's booking has literally just come in and am awaiting details, but Trevor is well known for his brilliant Tri-ang/G&J Lines replica floor, roof and wall papers plus components for antique/vintage dolls house restoration). Many of these artisans I have known for years, and some I have only known by reputation but I thank them all for supporting this event. It is going to be quite a gathering!

The Charity CRY & Why We Are Supporting It...

If you have been following KT Miniatures Journal, you will know that as organiser, I am going to donate 50% of any profit made from running this event to the brilliant charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which has special resonance for my family.  Not only would I  like to raise lots of money for CRY, but I would also like to raise awareness for them too...as many people have never heard of the charity and are unaware of the wonderful work they do.

Celia & Kate

As you know, my daughter suffered a cardiac arrest very suddenly and randomly, one fateful November evening back in 2017. However,  thanks to the skill and help of a lot of people, she survived against all the odds and pulled through. It was when she came out of hospital she felt isolated, there seemed to be no support network for youngsters with cardiac problems. But then someone mentioned CRY to us.Through CRY my daughter met other young people who had been through similar experiences, some of whom also had a S-I.C.D. fitted. This helped her greatly and gradually she was able to get back into the routine of life and back to full time work. Since then we have learned what an amazing charity CRY is, and how they can help young people along with their families.

So What Is The Charity CRY All About?

It stands for...Cardiac Risk in the Young. The charity's vision as a whole is "to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families." To find out more about the charity, see their website: www.c-r-y.org.uk

Other Ways To Raise Money For CRY At This Event
There is going to be a Grand Charity Raffle and some wonderful high quality miniatures from various UK artisans have already been donated, all proceeds will be in aid of CRY. Some of the prizes already donated can be viewed on the main promotional page for this event. Huge thanks to all the artisans who have already donated. Raffle tickets can only be purchased on the day at the event and each ticket will cost £1.00 each.

Refreshments throughout the duration of the event will be offered by the brilliant vintage style Oxfordshire caterer, Time For Tea. They provide pop up vintage tea rooms serving sandwiches, cakes, scones and plenty of tea! Huge thanks to owner Charlotte Cavanagh who has pledged to donate 10% of all profits made on the day to CRY.

So there we are...it is going to be a fantastic day and I hope lots of you can come! For the main promotional page for this event and full up to date information, including how to get to the venue, please click on the following link:

A Large & Rather Lovely Antique Dolls House For Sale

Although I have moved my workroom (now lovingly called "My Studio") down to the ground floor, for logistical and practical reasons I am not really able to cope with the larger dolls houses nowadays. Mainly due to a dodgy knee and back!

So when a "dolls house friend" of many years, sent me photos of a gorgeous large dolls house she wishes to sell, I did give it some serious consideration. But for reasons as stated above, I have had to decline in taking it on myself.  However, this house needs to be sold quickly, so I have offered to give it a mention on here, in the hope that someone reading this can give it a new home.

And here it is in all its magnificent glory!
My friend says that she thinks it is Victorian, and is not sure if it is an old Turnbull or not. I'm not sure either. It is back opening with three floors, and measures 32 1/2 inches wide x 20 inches deep  x 38 1/2 inches tall. It is on castors apparently, which is definitely a bonus.

It has beautiful flooring, all of which have retained their colour - possibly because they had all been covered with loose carpet previously. All papers appear to be original, inside and outside. One side will need re-papering.
The windows are glazed with glass and there is no indication of woodworm or ever having been woodworm.

A quick sale is needed and the friend is asking for £250 - which is a brilliant price for such an old beauty! Collection only from Orpington in Kent, as it is too large to package.

Please note this is not being sold by KT Miniatures, but if anyone is interested simply get in touch with me asap and I will put you in touch with the seller, then you can deal with her direct.

UPDATE: APPARENTLY THIS HAS NOW BEEN SOLD AND GONE TO A NEW HOME.

Windows From A c1930s Tri-ang No.53 Dolls House Available

Just gone up for sale recently are these metal windows from a c1930s  Tri-ang No.53 dolls house. The No.53 was part of the Ultra Modern Series (the flat roof art deco type).

These have all come from a totally dilapidated dolls house that could not be saved, and  rarely come along. They have all been over painted in blue, there is no acetate glazing, but are in a solid condition. The ones seen above are the smaller version.
There are some corner windows too, which are basically the smaller windows that have been bent at a 90 degree angle.

Then there is this large metal window.
Plus another large window that has been slightly curved as it has come from the bay window.

All of these are currently available and can be found under the "Restoration" section, on the following link:

There was a sun room that came with these but it was snapped up straight away, unsurprisingly due to its rarity.

There are one or two other components from the same dolls house including doors...which will go up for sale shortly.

A New KT Miniatures Website In The Offing....

Being a non techno' minded person, anything to do with computers, websites and well, basically technology in general, frightens me to death when problems arise.

And yep folks....KT Miniatures website is in trouble.

Even though my current website is only 3 years old, a new website is needed and it is becoming ever more urgent due to the impending changes that "Wordpress" are bringing in which will create incompatibility issues that can no longer be ignored.

I'm  just going to have to grab the bull by the horns and learn a whole new method of website editing.

A meeting is scheduled for today with a local IT company who, fingers crossed, are going to help create a new KT Miniatures website. They will need the patience of a saint!

Having listened to feedback from various sources with regards to the current website layout, I am considering changing the whole constructional format of how the antique and vintage dolls house items are displayed, in order to make it more concise and less complicated.

However, we are still in the very early stages of discussing/planning so this is going to take quite a while to sort out.

Wish me luck!

Am Back From Travels - KT Miniatures Is Open Again!

Sorry to all of you who have been trying to get hold of me this past week or so.....have been away to Bruges  for a wonderful few days  break (a birthday present off family), but am now back and raring to go. I have just finished catching up on the backlog of emails.
As I work from home, for obvious reasons I cannot broadcast beforehand when I am away.

Thank you for your patience.

Best Birthday Present Ever!

Well, followers of KT Miniatures will know that I have been awaiting the birth of my granddaughter for weeks. She had been giving her poor mum a real hard time from day one, it had not been an easy pregnancy. There have been a few dodgy moments, particularly at 28 weeks, and we all expected her to come early. Then the due date came and went, and the days rolled by. As my mega big birthday loomed on the horizon, family and friends would titter and say that wouldn't it be funny if she was born on my 60th birthday. But then we all thought no, she would definitely come before then surely:)

Ha ha, but guess what......9 days after the due date, on the afternoon of my 60th birthday last week, little Josie was born. Mum and baby are doing just fine. So my birthday plans were slightly amended last minute, and I spent my birthday evening at the hospital cuddling little Josie. The best birthday present ever....how could anything ever top that from now on!!!

I have been undertaking extra Grandma duties for her big brother and partaking in birthday celebrations ever since, but normality has now returned and I'm back at my computer once again.  Apologies for any slight delay in replying to emails and queries.

Unusual Art Deco Furniture Identified As Austrian By Wallach & Co. Of Vienna

I love a mystery!

So when these three unusual dolls house pieces came in, I did my utmost to try and identify them...but to no avail. They remained a mystery.  Then they went up for sale on KT Miniatures website, and I could only describe as seen. I'd been coming around to the idea that they were possibly Japanese, and had discounted them from being British or German, for various reasons.

Clearly all were in the Art Deco style, so I surmised that they were from the 1920s/30s. I have to say that whatever the wood is, it is very similar to some of those c1920s/30s Japanese pieces of furniture that have the inlay of Mount Fuji.
Also the gold coloured decorative handles are very different from anything I have seen before.

And then, as so often is the case, a lovely person came forward and identified them for me!! Apparently I had the information here at my fingertips...on page 123 of Marion Osborne's "A-Z 1914 To 1941 Dollshouses" (now well out of print). However, the reason that I did not pick up on it is that the tiny photocopy image of this furniture in my old and well thumbed copy of this book, was far from clear, in fact quite blurred...so it had literally just passed me by all these years, I had never noticed it there at the bottom of page 123.
But Marion Osborne has forwarded the above image from her original book and kindly given me permission to use it in this blog posting, so thank you Marion!

As you can see from the above information and the photo on the left, I can now definitively state that these two wooden sideboards and table date from the 1920s and were made by Wallach & Co of Vienna. It appears they are not British, not German, not Japanese but Austrian! They were sold by a continental American company that went by the name of Hyman Brummer, whose office and showroom were based at No.1 Amber Street, Shudehill, Manchester (UK). They were listed as being not just the agent and sole distributor for Wallach & Co, but for several other manufacturers too. Wallach & Co were advertised as a toy furniture manufacturer of artistic designs.

Artistic designs they certainly were and I have not seen sideboards particularly made quite like this before! The larger sideboard is quite complex in design.
All the doors and drawers open.
It measures 6 1/8" wide x 2" at deepest point x 5" back height, and would say that it is probably nearest to being 1/16th scale.
The decorative veneer inlay is quite attractive, although it appears to have buckled slightly on the larger sideboard.
The smaller sideboard is different again and has two unusual smaller upper shelves that are supported by metal rods.

All the doors and single drawer open.
This sideboard measures 4 1/8" wide x 1 1/2" deep x 4" back height.
The table's pedestal support is quite unusual and has strips of the decorative veneer inlay around all four sides.
The veneer inlay is also around the table top too. Height of the table is 2 1/8" so very much in the 1/16th scale.

So there we are, mystery solved.

The larger sideboard has already been snapped up but the smaller sideboard with table are being sold together, and are currently available. These can be found on the following page:

A Trio Of Very Different Overmantel Dolls House Fireplaces!

Over the past few days I have been listing various antique and vintage dolls house furniture to KT Miniatures website, which are available for purchase. Amongst the pieces that have most recently been listed are two highly sought after and increasingly hard to find 1920s/1930s fireplaces with overmantels. To make up the trio I have included a possibly homemade fireplace with overmantel mirror from the same era that is also currently for sale.
1. c1920s Elgin/Tri-ang Jacobean Fireplace With Overmantel. 2. 1920s/30s Fireplace With Overmantel Mirror (Possibly Homemade). 3. c1930s Pit-a-Pat Fireplace With Overmantel Mirror & Box Curb Seat.
I thought it would be fun to highlight all three together on here, as although very different in style, they all originate from the 1920s/1930s era and British made.

1. c1920s Elgin/Tri-ang Fireplace With Overmantel
Here is a Jacobean fireplace that were made by Elgin for Tri-ang and were part of the Tri-ang PF/10 Jacobean Dining Room set that was available from approx. c1922-1923. (Details of all the Elgin/Tri-ang furniture can be found in Marion Osborne's "The Book Of Tri-ang Furniture - http://ktminiatures.com/marion-osborne-books/).

It has a very distinctive printed brick card backing with lit fire detail and a brass grate.
This is so evocative of the 1920s.
The wooden fender too adds to the overall attractiveness and authenticity of  this fireplace.  Measures 5 3/4" wide x 5 1/2" high x 1 3/4" deep to end of fender with fireplace in situ. This fireplace and fender has just been put up for sale on KT Miniatures website and at the time of writing this post, is available to purchase.

2. c1920s/30s Fireplace With Overmantel Mirror
This is a wonderful wooden fireplace with its own unique charm, the like of which is rarely seen these days.
The fire surround and hearth are covered in a delightful tiled paper, instantly recognisable as the kind that was available around the pre-war era of the 1920s/30s.
In fact if you look underneath the hearth you can see the Delft style windmill frieze image that would have edged the bottom (top?) of the original sheet of tiled paper - how fantastic is that!
The fire has a large and rather chunky silver painted wooden fretwork grate with crumpled coloured tissue paper to give the illusion of a lit fire. The mantelpiece, fireplace sides and upper backing is in a dark varnished finish. Then there is the lovely rectangular mirror with shaped frame.

I am assuming that this has been homemade, possibly from old Handicrafts or Hobbies plans? It measures 5" at widest point x 2 5/8" at deepest point x 5 3/8" high.

This is currently for sale and can be found on the following page, you will need to scroll about halfway down until you get to it: CLICK HERE

3. c1930s Pit-a-Pat Fireplace With Overmantel Mirror & Curb Box Seat
Here is an increasingly hard to find and highly sought after c1930s Pit-a-Pat fireplace with overmantel mirror and fixed box curb seat.
I just love this! The oval mirror with mantelpiece underneath is just gorgeous so too the fixed box curb seat which is upholstered in brown rexine, that is widely seen on many of the Pit-a-Pat sofas and armchairs, etc.
This fireplace is fully intact and in original condition. Nailed around the rexine upholstered box curb seats is the silver coloured strip which gives added detail. So too there is the original metal grate, brick paper and distinctive wooden beading so often seen on Pit-a-Pat furniture.

This is in such super condition, whoever has had this all these years have certainly looked after it.
Even the red and black square label is still fully intact on the back.

The oval mirror is such a lovely touch and really adds to the overall charm of this fireplace. Measures 5 1/4" high x 4 1/2" wide x 1 5/8" deep. This has just been put up for sale on the Pit-a-Pat page and can be found on the following link: CLICK HERE

Why not go and check out many of the other antique and vintage items that can be found on KT Miniatures' various pages.
